Strong storms made their way through Iowa this afternoon, damaging the Lynnville-Sully School. Superintendent Shane Ehresman tells KNIA/KRLS news the storm hit around 1pm and strong winds took off half the roof of the middle school gymnasium where students were eating lunch below. Several trees in the area were damaged and flying debris damaged the school fitness center and baseball dugout. No one was injured as a result of the damage. Students and staff were moved to safe portions of the school and classes went on as scheduled. Students described the sound of the winds taking the roof off as a giant “sucking noise,” and a “locomotive.” The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office reports that officials are uncertain weather or not it was strait-line winds or a tornado that did the damage.
