Knoxville’s West Elementary has been named a 2010 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.  Five Iowa schools were chosen for the award which honors schools whose students achieve very high levels of achievement or make significant progress and helped close the gaps especially among disadvantaged and minority students.  West Elementary was nominated by the Iowa Department of Education after 100% of the school’s fifth graders achieved a proficient level in the math portion of the 2009 Iowa Test of Basic Skills.  A total of 304 schools across the nation were selected as Blue Ribbon Schools this year and Principal John Keitges and one teacher will attend the Blue Ribbon Award Ceremony in Washington DC in November. The Blue Ribbon Schools program is run by the US government and is considered the highest honor an American school can achieve.
