Knoxville High School has been selected as the recipient of the High School Science Supplies and Technology grant from the 3M Corporation. Knoxville 3M Human Resources Manager Jeff Horacek tells KNIA/KRLS news this is a new grant that is sponsored by 3M’s Community Affairs department in St. Paul, MN. He says the various 3M plants were notified of the opportunity and could invite one local school to apply for the grant. Knoxville High School then submitted an application stating what they would use the up to $20,000 grant monies for.

Based on the need, Knoxville was selected to receive the maximum grant amount and Principal Kevin Crawford says the money will be used to purchase a variety of items and get the necessary supplies to meet the needs of some increase class sizes. One of the items that will be purchased is a set of equipment that includes probes that can be used with a computer to give students the opportunity to get an exact reading on their experiments. Crawford says without this grant the school would not have been able to purchase such supplies.

Horacek says the 3M Corporation is very big on math and science and the goal of these and other grants available to students across the county is to increase student achievement and make the connection between these courses and how they impact our everyday lives and future careers. He says 3M strives to make sure students are ready for higher education and prepared to succeed in math and science in college.
