Construction on the new rain garden in Knoxville will begin this week. Dennis Webb of the Knoxville Streets Department says the construction process is scheduled to start today. Some work has already been done at the site, which is located on the old Maid Rite property on the east side of Knoxville, as crews recently installed a fire hydrant and have dug another hole to aid in drainage in the area. The rain garden will be funded by a grant from the Soil and Water Conservation District and is designed to improve the water quality of Competine Creek and prevent flooding by capturing runoff water. Kendall Van Kooten, a student working with the conservation district on the rain garden project will present his proposal this month and receive an Uncommon Student Award from the Hoover Library Association.
