With the leaves falling from the trees during this time of year, it’s important to know the appropriate way to dispose of them. Knoxville City Manager Dick Schrad says that it’s illegal to deposit grass clippings or leaves in the street. He says the primary reason is to keep the material out of the storm sewer system. Schrad adds that the city doesn’t have a composting or yard waste drop-off site, but is hoping to establish one in the near future. Residents of Knoxville have a choice of composting their own, mulching them into the lawn or burning them, which can only be done on the individuals property. Pella Public Works Director Denny Buyert says that it is illegal to burn leaves in the City of Pella. Buyert adds that only city-authorized waste bags that say Metro Waste Authority will be picked up, and those can be purchased at the Pella City Hall and the Public Works office.
