A Florida man wanted for robbery with a firearm and attempted murder was arrested in Knoxville Wednesday. Sergeant Barbara Jones of the Orlando Police Department tells KNIA/KRLS news, the charges stem from an incident on October 24, 2010 when 33 year-old Jason Phillip Haikey and 44 year-old Mark D. Ward, robbed and shot Franklin Brisbane during a drug deal. According to an Orange County, Florida arrest affidavit, Brisbane met up with Haikey at a gas station in Orlando to purchase some marijuana. When he got into Haikey’s vehicle to make the transaction Ward then came up to the window of the car and pointed a gun at him and said “Give up the money” before shooting him in the right back area. When the victim moved into the back seat he was shot again in the left pectoral muscle. At that time Haikey pointed a gun at Brisbane and said “Get out, or I’m going to kill you.” Brisbane then jumped out of the vehicle and and went into the store.

According to Mike Powell with the United State Marshals Service for the Southern District of Iowa, Haikey left Florida and after an investigation, Orlando law enforcement contacted the U.S. Marshals Task Force with a list of addresses they thought he could be located at, which included one in Knoxville. U.S. Marshals with the assistance of the Knoxville Police Department located and arrested Haikey at a job site Wednesday morning and found out he was living and working in Knoxville as a roofer. He was arrested and booked into the Marion County jail where he is currently being held on the Florida charges without bond. Haikey will be extradited by Florida authorities after waiving his extradition hearing Wednesday afternoon.

Powell says this arrest is a testimate to what can be accomplished when local, state and federal law enforcement works together. He says it is the goal of the U.S. Marshals Service to help local law enforcement agencies bring such criminals to justice.
