As the weather gets colder many drivers are tempted to warm up their cars before they start driving to their destination, but there are risks involved. Marion County Sheriff Ron Goemaat says many times drivers try to warm up their vehicles and end up leaving them unattended, which puts them at risk of theft.

Goemaat says though we would all like to be able to get into a warm vehicle during the cold winter months he advises against leaving your vehicle unattended at anytime. Instead, he recommends drivers clear off all snow, ice and frost from windows and take off driving slowly and the vehicle will warm up fairly quickly.

Sheriff Goemaat says while stolen vehicles have not been a large issue in the county recently they do happen occasionally and its important to not give criminals an extra opportunity.
