Some Central Students Have Difficulty Voting

An unknown number of Central College students had difficulty providing state required proof of residency while attempting to vote using same day registration in Tuesday’s election in Pella.

A general residence hall address is insufficient proof of residence according to Iowa law. The Marion County Auditor’s Office, Central officials, and the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office worked to resolve any issues over the course of the day. Central College officials reported that they were pleased with the efforts of the Marion County Auditor’s office in assisting with the situation. Marion County Auditor Jake Grandia tells KNIA/KRLS news that in the worst case scenario, individuals having difficulty providing documentation required for same day registration are allowed to cast provisional ballots. Both Grandia and Central College officials report that this is often a problem for college students across the state, and hope that the issue is addressed by future legislation.
