Team Committment Leads Pella Volleyball Back to State Tourney

The Pella High School volleyball team is just a day away from opening play at the State Volleyball Tournament in Class 3-A, and go into Cedar Rapids with ten seniors – some of which are making their fourth straight trip to the state tournament. Among those seniors is Addie Smith – a reserve defensive specialist for the Lady Dutch. Smith says while it means a lot for her and her classmates to have reached this point for the fifth straight year, she feels it is more of a reflection on the program as a whole and the leaders who came before them.

“I think it means more that we’ve just been working hard for four years, and that it’s paid off every single time,” said Smith. “Every single year we’ve had a group of girls who are willing to pull together and work for each other, and because we work for each other and not for ourselves, we’re able to make it to State each year. It’s just a blessing.”

The Lady Dutch will also be looking to buck recent history, as they will try and defeat Sioux City Bishop Heelan tomorrow night to advance past the first round for the first time in their current five-year run. Pella’s opening round game in the Class 3-A State Volleyball Tournament begins at 6:00 p.m. tomorrow night at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
