The Knoxville Police Department has teamed up with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau’s for Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) waves this year. The most recent sTEP wave was over the Thanksgiving holiday where the Knoxville Police Department used the special funds to have additional officers on patrol. During this time, three operating while intoxicated arrests were made along with several citations.

In addition, two seatbelt surveys were conducted recently, one before thanksgiving and one after, both resulting in a result of 95% compliance. Lieutenant Darrel Brown says while these numbers seem high, they would like to see closer to 100%. He says seatbelts do save lives and full compliance with the seatbelt law is the main goal of the Knoxville Police Department and Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau.
