Large Tree Makes Its Way Through Tainter Gates at Lake Red Rock

If you’ve been around the North Tailwater rip rap at Lake Red Rock recently, you’ve likely noticed the large tree cut into pieces resting near the parking lot. Park Ranger Tracy Spry tells KNIA/KRLS News that the tree flushed through the tainter gates during the floods this summer. She adds that each tainter gate is 41×45 feet so it’s understandable how something so large could get through. No one at the lake knows where the tree came from as the corps of engineers continue to look into it. After tests were sent to Iowa State University, it was determined that it was a Cottonwood tree and approximately 120-150 years old.
