The Central College basketball teams were in Waverly last night, where they split an Iowa Conference double header with Wartburg College. A barrage of three-pointers by Wartburg was too much for the Central College women’s basketball team to handle, as the Dutch suffered a 77-52 defeat at the hands of the Knights

Wartburg jumped out to an early 25-9 advantage and never led by less than nine points the rest of the way, as the Central women were unable to find a response for Wartburg’s 11-of-18 shooting from beyond the arc.  Haley Brillhart led the Dutch with 14 points and 7 rebounds in the loss, which drops the Central women to 4-15 overall and 1-9 in the Iowa Conference.

In the men’s game, Central got a big boost from its reserve players to rally from an early deficit for a 66-57 win over Wartburg.  Leading the charge was sophomore forward Jacob Winkler, who came of the bench to record his second straight double-double, notching 10 points and 13 rebounds.

The Central men were able to overcome poor shooting from the floor by getting to the free throw line 34 times and spreading around the scoring, as every player who saw time on the court contributed offensively.  Demarco Turner had 13 points as four Central players scored ten or more points.

The Central College men’s basketball team has now won back-to-back games and is 10-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

Both teams return to action on Saturday on the road at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.  The women’s game will begin at 2:00 p.m., with the men to follow around 4:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on 92.1 fm KRLS.
