As temperatures continue to hover around the single digits, people may be tempted to bring out the electric blankets or throw some extra wood on the fire. Pella Fire Chief Doug Van Gorkom says there are several things folks can do to ensure they won’t have to call upon the services of the Pella Fire Department. He says that depending on the type of wood being burned in a fireplace, some extra care may be needed as woods like pine can increase the amount of pitch and tar that accumulate in a chimney. Van Gorkom adds that if people want to use space heaters or electric blankets, they need to make sure that power cords are in good shape and of high quality to prevent an electrical fire. He also asks that people make sure they have fresh batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
