The Knoxville Girls Basketball Squad built a 14 point halftime lead against Newton last night only to see the Cardinals storm back to tie it up early in the fourth quarter, however Knoxville got six quick points on two three point bombs, then put in six more in the post to stave off Newton 54-43. The Panthers took advantage of 14 first half turnovers by Newton to build a 30-16 lead, but when the Cardinals tied it at 38, Knoxville would close the game on a 16-5 run highlighted by six big points in the paint from Ellie Hawkshead and Katie Ayers. Coach Jim Utiermarkt was happy that the girls responded to the adversity of the third quarter. Alex Abens led Knoxville and all scorers with 22 points, Katie Ayers had a season high 14. Knoxville is now 5-8 on the season and will have until Friday off to prepare for Pella Christian.
