Lady Eagles’ Defense Smothers Newton as PC Rolls

The slow-moving first few minutes of last night’s Pella Christian girls basketball game at Newton quickly gave way to a flurry of baskets and dozens of turnovers as the Lady Eagles completely shut down the Cardinals in a 67-16 victory. Pella Christian already held a convincing 35-12 halftime lead before shutting out Newton in the third quarter and allowing only four points in the final period to close the game on a 32-4 run.

Lady Eagles’ Head Coach Kevin Van Maanen said the girls’ willingness to work through the offense for a good look at the basket was important in the win.

“We can shoot any time we want, [but] we’ve got to make sure we take good, quality shots. That’s something we hadn’t done very well in the first part of the year. I thought tonight the team looked to take good, quality shots; instead of the first [one] that was available,” said Van Maanen. “I thought we made them work a little bit [on defense], and the result got some good shots for us and got us in a good rhythm.”

In a particularly good rhythm was junior guard Jasmin Schelhaas, who scored a game-high 26 points, while also pulling down six rebounds. No other player scored more than 9 points, but a total of 9 players cracked the scoring column for Pella Christian. Newton’s Allie Sheets led the Cardinal’s in scoring, while teammate Kristin Samson chipped in 5 rebounds.

The Lady Eagles are now 3-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference and face a demanding next several days, with a game today at Chariton, ADM on the road Monday, and Oskaloosa at home on Tuesday.
