The Pella Christian girls and boys went into Knoxville last night and converted on the season sweep of the Panthers. The Lady Eagles hit the floor in the first game of the doubleheader, and Pella Christian, in Coach Kevin Van Maanen’s words, came out flat defensively, but picked up the defense in the second quarter. The Lady Eagles had seven players jump into the scoring column in the first half. They came out strong in quarter number three, extending their lead to 20 points heading into the final frame. Knoxville played their best quarter of the night in the final eight minutes, but they found itself too far behind as Pella Christian took the game by a final of 51-36. Coach Kevin Van Mannen commented about the slow start. Jasmin Schelhaas and Paige Zylstra lead the team in scoring with ten a piece. Shelby Weaver added eight. Meanwhile Knoxville Coach Jim Utiermarkt said they wanted to cut down on turnovers, stop the transition game, and keep Pella Christian from penetrating. Utiermarkt said his team just did not do well on all three. Alex Abens scored a game high 17 points as Knoxville falls to 5-9 on the season and 2-6 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Knoxville heads to South Tama on Tuesday. With the win, Pella Christian improves to 9-3, and 6-2 in conference play. The Eagles will host Grinnell on January 25th.
