The Pella girls came out strong against Oskaloosa Friday night, en route to a convincing 58-35 victory.
Once again, the Lady Dutch had double-digit players in the scoring column Friday night, three players with 10 or more points. Makenzie Vander Molen led the team with 11 points, Lindsay Bentzinger and Kelsey Fynaardt each added 10 points.
Pella seemed to have momentum throughout the game. They were up 17-7 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as the lead increased with each quarter played. A 15 point lead at the half turned into a 18 point lead at the end of three, before recording a 23 point victory.
With the win, Pella moves to 11-2 on the year with a 9-1 conference record. Coupled with a South Tama loss to Pella Christian, the Lady Dutch now find themselves in a tie with South Tama for the conference lead. South Tama will host Pella on Tuesday. South Tama beat Pella by 13 in Pella on January 7th.
The Lady Dutch will play today against Washington.
The Pella boys squad battled all night with the Indians on Friday, but came out on the short end of the stick with a 47-51 loss.
Both teams started slow, as it was, at one point, 6-6 midway through the first quarter. Pella had a 14-6 lead going into the second quarter when Oskaloosa started to find their shot. The lead was cut to 2 point at the half (25-23). In the second half Oskaloosa came out strong forcing Pella into early turnovers and grabbed the lead for the first time in the opening minutes.
The two teams would go back-and-forth the remainder of the game. Pella had a narrow 3 point lead after 3 quarters. A poor shooting night and clutch free-throws from the Indians down the stretch translated into Pella’s first conference loss since Norwalk beat them on December 14th.
Kyle Newendorp and Lucas Boyd had team-highs with 14 points each.
With the loss, Pella falls to 10-3 overall with a conference record of 8-2. Pella Christian survived a scare from South Tama Friday night to pull even with the Little Dutch for the conference lead.
Pella boys will have the weekend off before heading to South Tama on Tuesday.
