New teacher pay reforms are being proposed by new Department of Education Director Jason Glass, one being a merit based pay system that would reward teachers who show exemplary performance. Brian Miller, Prinipal at Jefferson Intermediate School in Pella says he supports the idea that high performing teachers should be rewarded, but is unsure how to make those measurements fair and equitable. Pella Middle School Principal Matt Patton echoed those concerns and added that such a system might lead to an adversarial work environment if teachers feel their performance hasn’t been fairly measured or rewarded. Both administrators say that a merit-based pay system is a good idea in theory, but leaves more questions than answers.
