The Marion County Board of Supervisors held their annual organizational meeting yesterday. At the meeting Sam Nichols was appointed Chairman of the Board and Jim Kingery was appointed Vice Chair. The supervisors chose to continue to meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 9:30am in the board room of the Marion County Courthouse and approved the county holidays for the 2011 calendar year.
In addition, several reappointments were made including Steve Edwards as the county’s ADA Coordinator, Engineer Roger Schletzbaum as the Designated County Representative for Federal Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing and County Weed Commissioner and Marion County Sheriff’s deputy and reserve peace officer appointments.
The Supervisors also held a special meeting yesterday. At the meeting the board, along with Knoxville City Manager Dick Schrad and Sheriff Ron Goemaat discussed a proposal from the City of Knoxville in regards to who is responsible for paying for the medical costs of prisoners arrested by the Knoxville Police Department prior to their booking in the Marion County jail. A meeting to further discuss the matter with the Knoxville City Council will be held at 9am at the Knoxville City Hall.
The board also discussed a proposed 28E agreement for reimbursement for regional services provided by the Department of Human Services facility in Warren County. The total reimbursement costs are expected to be between $3,000 and $4,000 annually which will primarily cover supplies. The supervisors stated they want answers from the Iowa Department of Human Services on why the local facility was shut down and they are still responsible for these costs even though residents are not getting the same quality of service before they consider signing such an agreement.
The board also discussed the future plans for the two buildings that currently house the county public health facilities and plan to further discuss the matter at their next regular meeting January 10th.
