The state legislature is currently studying a bill to repeal Iowa’s bottle deposit law. House Study 74 would remove the five cent-per container charge on cans and bottles. Sara Bixby, Director of the South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency says repeal of the bottle bill would increase the operating costs at her agency. Sherri Cunningham, owner of the Pella Redemption Center says if the bill passes, she’s out of a job. Cunningham feels that large corporate interests have been pushing for repeal of the law for years. She says cans and bottles will end up in landfills if the law is repealed, which is the main reason the bottle bill was signed into law in the first place. Cunningham has three employees that would also have to look for new work if the measure passes.
