Knoxville Superintendent Weighs in on Administration Consolidation Proposal

Democratic Senator Matt McCoy of Des Moines is proposing the elimination of more than 200 public school superintendent positions, claiming it will save the state between $20 and $40 million a year. Senate file 22 would cap the number of superintendents to one per county by 2013. Knoxville Schools Superintendent Dr. Randy Flack says this proposal would in fact not save the state a dime. Dr. Flack says state funding for schools is determined by students not personnel. He says he does agree that more schools could be sharing their superintendents but he does not think Senator McCoy has a good picture of what a superintendent is responsible for.
