New Census Numbers Affect Local Communities

Mike Brown, GIS coordinator for Pella says the 2010 census report is good news for Pella. The city saw a population growth of 5.3%, bringing the total to 10,352. Brown says the increase in population will mean more funds from the state’s road use tax fund, and will also necessitate a re-drawing of city wards. He says the positive growth in much of the county will be a boost for everyone, as the counties communities are interconnected. He expects to have official funding numbers calculated by April. Knoxville City Manager Dick Schrad says Knoxville will see a decrease in revenue in their Road Use Tax funds due to the 5.3% drop in population over the past 10 years. However, Schrad says the good news is these funds may be mitigated by the infusion of Transportation Investment Moves the Economy in the 21st Century, or TIME-21 funds into the road use tax fund base. He says they will have more information on the impact of these funds once it is presented to the City Council on Monday.
