Another proposal for redevelopment of the Knoxville VA campus is being submitted that includes a mixed use of the campus for job creation, housing and training development. The proposal, titled the “City of Knoxville Iowa Pleasant Street Sustainability Center” was developed by the Sustainable Action LLC through the Kowalenko Consulting Group which is based out of Chicago, IL.
The vision for the center is to serve the community of Knoxville, Marion County, the region and veterans with a multi-use development that will fit and adjust with the City of Knoxville master plan for sound, sustainable, economic development through job creation.
The proposal splits the campus into three areas one for assisted living, one for VA housing and the largest section would be used for education, research and development.
California Miramar University, based out of San Diego has stated that they are interested in establishing a full branch campus in Knoxville to offer vocational training and certificate programs targeting the needs of the region. This would use a large portion of the campus as there would need to be space for separate male and female dormitories, a cafeteria, main educational facility with classrooms and administrative offices, an auditorium, grounds space for track and field and a soccer field and space for a lab and library.
Other potential tenants listed in the proposal are a homeless veteran housing, assisted living housing, an incubator for new businesses, laboratories and experimental facilities for green products, an art and community center and Knoxville historical and oral history museum.
The proposal states that the City of Knoxville will be consulted with every step of the development of the campus to assure that there are no negative impacts to the surrounding community. Sustainable Action states that they recognize that the success of the campus rests on its integration with the social and economic fabric of the city, county and region.
