Japan Disaster Raises Question For Iowa’s Exports

As Japan continues to deal with all the problems associated with the earthquakes subsequent tsunami last week, many are beginning to wonder about the economic impact of the country.

Japan, with the third largest economy in the world is Iowa’s largest market for corn exports, among other Iowa agriculture products. State Representative Jim Van Engelenhoven says he expects the disasters there will have some impact on those exports, but to what extent is not known.
Japan’s transportation system has been disrupted, with several ports out of operation following the tsunamis. Van Engelenhoven says the issue hasn’t come up in anyway at the statehouse, but says it’s certainly an issue legislators will be watching closely.
