Proposed legislation in the Iowa Senate could change some of the rules for drivers under the age of 18. Senate File 184 would change the length of an instruction permit, where teens must have a parent or guardian in the vehicle when driving, from six months to one year.

The bill also would limit the number of non-related minor passengers in the vehicle to one and teens would have to remain accident and violation free for one full year before being able to obtain their license.

Knoxville Police Chief Dan Losada says he thinks these changes are a great idea. He says the biggest causes of accidents in young drivers are unnecessary distractions and their lack of experience.

Losada says though some of these changes could be difficult to enforce, he is interested in seeing how the legislation moves forward and his department will enforce whatever laws they chose to approve.
