Residents and business owners in Knoxville are urged to be on the lookout for counterfeit bills currently circulating around town.

According to the Knoxville Police Department, at least three area businesses have received counterfeit $20 bills in the past few days.

The bills are a 2006 series with ID15355040A serial number.

Chief Dan Losada encourages residents to take a good look at any money you receive as real bills have a certain look and feel to them. He says it is important to look for the security thread on the bills as well as the red and blue threads weaved into the paper. Losada says passing a counterfeit bill is a class D felony, though receiving it is not illegal as long as the recipient does not try to pass it on.

Those who spot what they believe could be a counterfeit bill are asked to contact the police department immediately at 828-0541.
