Private and parochial schools may have another route to accreditation under a proposed House Bill. Currently, all schools in the state must be accredited through the Department of Education. Under House File 583, several non-governmental accreditation agencies would be allowed to evaluate non-public schools. Elizabeth Hocksbergen, Principal at Peoria Christian School says this is a good measure for non-public schools, especially Christian schools. She says professional development for teachers and curriculum development for a Christian organization should be evaluated from that perspective, which is lacking in the current model. The bill is currently being worked through committee.
