A ninth-inning comeback bid came up short for the Central College baseball team Saturday afternoon, as the Dutch were dealt a 4-3 setback against the University of Dubuque.
The game featured mirroring performances by both starting pitchers, as Central’s Ryan and Dubuque’s Paul Krenger each allowed eight hits and walked three batters to go the distance for their respective teams. Krenger struck out 10 batters for the Dutch, while Goetzinger fanned six.
Central’s offense struggled again, though, as only Anthony Miller and Ryan Allison were able to put runs on the board for the Dutch – two of which came in the game’s final inning on a two-run shot from Allison with two outs to pull Central within one run.  Krenger forced a grounder on the next batter, though, to end the game.
The loss drops Central to 14-11 overall and 4-6 in the Iowa Conference, but the Dutch will need to put the disappointment behind them as they conclude the series with the Spartans with a doubleheader starting this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Kuyper Athletics Complex in Pella.
