A pair of wins by the Central College softball team yesterday puts the Dutch in sole possession of first place in the Iowa Conference, but by no means did the victories come easily. Despite ripping Simpson College for 17 hits and 12 runs between two games, the Storm found ways to hang around and made surges in the seventh inning of both games before the Dutch were able to hold on for wins of 8-6 and 4-2.
Ace pitcher Kiley Lythberg battled through an injury to improve her record to 11-2, thanks to a lot of support from her offense – namely freshman shortstop Annie Sarcone. Sarcone pounded out three hits in the opener, including a three-run homer in the seventh inning, and batted in five runs. She has four homers this season and three in the last eight days.
Pitchers Brie Haycraft and Rhianna Fleetwood teamed up to win the second game, as Haycraft pitched through five innings before returning in the seventh to get the game-ending strikeout and improve her record to 7-1. Second baseman Angela Davis led the offense with two hits, including her first home run of the season; while center fielder Holly Von Fumetti also recorded two hits.
The Central softball team is now 25-3 overall and 6-0 in the Iowa Conference entering Saturday’s doubleheader at Loras College.
