New Report Brings Attention To Soil Erosion Rate In Iowa

A new report out says topsoil in some parts of the state is eroding at a significant rate.
The study by the Environmental Work Group shows top soil erosion levels around Marion County to be approximately 5 tons per acre, consistent with the state average and the sustainable rate of erosion.
Dr. Richard Cruse, an Agronomy Professor at Iowa State University who helped conduct research for the study says the regeneration rate is about one half ton of top soil per acre per year.
He says the report is important because it gives a detailed look at just how much soil is being lost locally which in some areas is up to 100 times more than the regeneration rate.
With that information, landowners can take positive steps to slow or reverse the process.
