This week we celebrate National Infant Immunization week. According to Judi Van Hulzen, registered nurse with Marion County Public Health, the yearly observance aims to highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine preventable diseases and celebrate the achievements of the immunization program in promoting healthy communities within the United States. Van Hulzen says though we don’t often hear about many of the diseases infants are vaccinated for there are still risks. She says vaccinations have helped eliminate several diseases over the years and we are now more protected against illnesses than ever before.
The Marion County Public Health department offers immunizations for children who are uninsured or who’s insurance does not cover the vaccines. Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s doctor and make sure they are up to date on their shots.
