Severe Weather Awareness Week: Flash Flooding
Posted By News On April 4, 2011 @ 6:30 am In Today’s Local News | Comments Disabled
Monday kicks off this year’s Severe Weather Awareness Week and the first topic is flash flooding. Flash floods are defined as a rapid rise of water along a stream or low-lying urban area. According to the National Weather Service, the majority of flash floods are caused by slow moving thunderstorms, storms that redevelop over the same area or heavy rains from tropical storms and hurricanes. More Americans die from flash flooding each ear than any other thunderstorm related hazard, amounting to more than 140 fatalities a year. Nearly half of all flash flood fatalities occur in vehicles so it’s important for motorists to always remember to “turn around don’t drown”.
