Monday kicks off this year’s Severe Weather Awareness Week and the first topic is flash flooding. Flash floods are defined as a rapid rise of water along a stream or low-lying urban area. According to the National Weather Service, more Americans die from flash flooding each ear than any other thunderstorm related hazard, amounting to more than 140 fatalities a year. Nearly half of all flash flood fatalities occur in vehicles so it’s important for motorists to always remember to “turn around don’t drown”.
