Two of Iowa’s largest water fowl have found a new home at the DeCook Wetlands.
The swans were brought in as part of a larger effort by the Mark and Kay DeCook family, of Pella, to “rewild” their 200 acre spread south of Attica.
The number of trumpeter swans in the country was as low as 69 in the 1930’s due to unregulated hunting and destruction of the bird’s natural habitat.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources started a restoration campaign in the 1990’s that has culminated in 42 wild pairs of trumpeter swans nesting in Iowa alone in 2010.
