The Central College softball team extended its winning streak to 20 games Tuesday evening, with 6-1 and 4-1 victories over Buena Vista University.
Designated player Rachael Everingham had four hits on five at-bats and Central tied a school record with three home runs to win the opener.
The Beavers seemed determined to not be defeated by power-hitter Katie Tenboer – who was walked five times – but the rest of the Central line-up made the pay for it, as pitcher Kiley Lythberg hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning, and catcher Catilyn Meyer and shortstop Annie Sarcone each belted solo homers.
Lythberg picked up the win in the pitching circle in game one; giving up just four hits, walking one and striking out six. She is now 8-1 on the season.
Pitchers Brie Haycraft and Rhianna Fleetwood combined to pick up the victory in the second game of the doubleheader; despite the fact that the Dutch were outhit 9-6 by Buena Vista.
The 20-game win streak is the second-longest in Central softball history, but is well behind the record 32-straight games won by the school’s 1993 national champions.
Central will put their 20-2 overall record on the line this weekend in a challenging non-conference trip to Eau Claire, Wisconsin to face St. Scholastica on Friday and Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a pair of games on Saturday.
