In the spring of 2009 the Iowa legislature passed a bill that ties a community’s eligibility for state disaster assistance to their participation in the National Flood Insurance Program. The bill states that as of July 1st of this year, only communities in good standing with the NFIP will receive a state contribution for public assistance grants associated with flood-related disasters. According to Marion County Emergency Management Coordinator Jeff Anderson, in light of this deadline, Marion County officials are working in cooperation with applicable city leaders to ensure the awareness of the legislation. He says they plan to meet individually with city leaders to outline the program highlights as it relates to their local governments.
