A Knoxville Elementary School principal will receive a pie in the face Wednesday after students met their goals during the Parent Teacher Organization’s recent Spell-a-thon. PTO President Dave Garcia tells KNIA/KRLS students at West Elementary spelled 90% of their words correctly and will receive an extra recess, ice cream social and get to see principal Mike Montgomery pied in the face. Northstar students also excelled in their spelling efforts, spelling 86% of their words correctly.
As a whole Knoxville students spelled 22,759 of a total 26,291 words correctly. In total there were 268 perfect spellers who will receive a special certificate signed by their principal, and their photo on the bulletin board.
Garcia says he think the event went awesome this year and it’s exciting to see the kids succeed. He days they will likely continue hosting Spell-a-thon events in the future and are also considering a math-a-thon or jog-a-thon.
The Spell-a-thon event was a fundraiser for the PTO and more than $13,000 was collected to be used for various field trips and equipment at the two elementary schools. Garcia thanks all the kids for doing such a good job and appreciate everyone who helped support the students by making a pledge.
