After rain postponed the originally planned meet this past Saturday, the Pella boys tennis team will return to their home courts today to host Centerville in the Preliminary Substate round for Class 1-A Boys Tennis. The Little Dutch finished in third place in last week’s District Meet, with the Big Red taking runner-up honors.
Beyond the obvious challenge that Centerville will pose in terms of skill, Pella may be without the services of Brennan Johnson, who injured his shoulder early in last Thursday’s meet.
Even if the Little Dutch have to shuffle their line-up around, Head Coach Nick Siepel says it’s a scenario the team has prepared themselves for.
“All year long we’ve rested different top varsity players, allowing guys lower in our line-up a chance to step up and play higher numbered slots to get that experience and play higher level competition,” said Siepel. “So we’re really hoping that pays off today.”
Johnson and his doubles teammate Will Loux have already qualified as individuals for the State Meet. With a win today, the Pella boys tennis team would play again on Saturday against Maharishi in Fairfield for the Substate Semifinals.
