Record Turnout for Pella’s Klompen Classic Road Race

Over 2200 people took part in Wednesday night’s Klompen Classic 5k run and walk in Pella – a new record for the popular event that serves as the unofficial kick-off party for Tulip Time.  36-year-old Julius Rotich of West Des Moines finished the 3.1 mile course through the Tulip City in the fastest time, clocking a 15:36 as the overall winner and top male finisher.  38-year-old Robyn Friedman of Newton finished fifth overall and was the top female runner; clocking a time of 16:54.

53-year-old Deb Thomford of Rochester, Minnesota was the winner in the female Masters Division, with 47-year-old Ed Tormey of Indianola winning the men’s Master’s Division.

Of the over 2200 that participated, there were 1651 runners, spanning from 6-year-olds Bethany Schreur and Molly Zylstra of Pella to 87-year-old Nicholas Leydens – also of Pella.

KNIA/KRLS News Director Shaylon Cochran and sports broadcaster Eric Gotschall were among the event’s runners, competing in the 25 to 29-year-old male division.

The 18th annual event serves as the main fundraiser of the year for the Crossroads of Pella organization.
