Kane Fans 20 as Pella Baseball Splits with Grinnell

Two very efficient performances on the pitcher’s mound highlighted a Varsity doubleheader split Monday night for the Pella baseball team against Grinnell.

Despite falling 14-5 in the first game, Chris Bandstra threw only 113 pitches – 88 of which were strikes – in his 6 1/3 innings of work.  Additionally, though the Tigers scored 14 runs in the win, only three of those runs were earned.

Things were much tighter in the nightcap, as the Little Dutch needed extra innings to secure a 2-1 victory.  Pella did not get on the board until the bottom of the seventh inning, when they tied the game at 1-1, then got a game-winning double off of the outfield wall from Trevor Wood to knock home the winning run.

Schyler Kane was masterful on the mound, pitching all nine innings and allowing no walks, no hits, and struck out a staggering 20 Grinnell batters.  Kane’s only blemish on an otherwise stellar performance was a pair of hit batsmen, which allowed the Tigers their only run.

The Pella baseball team is now 12-13 overall and 9-8 in the Little Hawkeye Conference, entering Wednesday’s contest at Pella Christian.
