The Pella baseball team picked up the first of what they hope will be several wins this season, splitting a varsity doubleheader at home with Newton on Friday night.
Pella’s Ryan Lanke went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run in the opener, but four errors on defense let the Cardinals sneak away with a 5-2 win.  Pitcher Chris Bandstra was credited with the loss, giving up eight hits in a solid performance on the mound.  The Little Dutch also tallied eight hits on offense.
Pella came back with a vengeance in the nightcap, ripping Newton for ten hits on their way to a 13-3 triumph in six innings.  Trevor Wood and Paul Anderson each went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Little Dutch, scoring two runs apiece; with Wood also stealing two bases.  Bandstra also swung a big stick, going 2-for-4 at the dish with a pair of doubles that bounced off of the wall in center field.
On the mound, Schyler Kane mowed down the Cardinal batters, striking out seven and giving up just one walk for the complete game victory.
The Pella baseball team is now 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.  They are back on the field today for a tournament in Ottumwa.
