The Pella City Council met in special session Wednesday night. The lone item on the agenda was a resolution on an agreement with Missouri River Energy Services to provide electrical generation services for the city through 2045.
The new agreement would force the closure of Pella’s coal fired power plant which employs 20 people.
The Council has been working on the project since 2006.
Council member Mark DeJong said during the meeting that he regrets seeing the plant shut down as much as anyone, noting it’s too small to operate economically given future environmental regulations with which it would have to comply.
The City expects to save at least $5 million over the first ten years of the contract.
