The Vermeer Windmill is one of Pella’s most notable attractions, seen from miles away. The Vermeer mill is the largest functioning grain mill in North America, and is run by a team of volunteers. Jim Brandl, one of the volunteer molenaars, which is dutch for miller, says it takes someone the length of a summer season to learn how to safely operate the mill. Brandl says only a few of the team actually grind and mill the grain the the Historical Society sells. He says they’re always looking for new volunteers, and is a great way to learn about dutch heritage.
