The Central College women’s basketball team is hosting a pair of skills camps this week for young girls looking to better themselves at the game of basketball. A pair of two-day camps for young girls in 1st through 6th grades and 7th through 12th grades will begin Monday, with a goal of developing the campers’ skills in a positive setting with individual attention.

Central College Women’s Head Basketball Coach Mike Jacobsma says he’s looking forward to having his coaching staff and players work with the young girls, adding that the camp’s main goal is to help the girls better enjoy the game of basketball.

“With the younger kids – and at all levels, really – it comes down to fundamentals and skills, but the game has to be fun for them. We get them excited about the game of basketball and allow them to get to know our basketball players as camp counselors,” says Jacobsma.

“It’s good for our players to teach those young kids as well, because they [campers] really look up to them, and they’re going to help lead them into becoming better basketball players in the future.”

Jacobsma adds that he will still be accepting registrations up until the start of the camp, even though the initial registration deadlines have passed. The “Lil Hoopers” camp will run from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday and Tuesday and is $50 to register for. The overnight individual camp is $175 for overnight campers and $155 for commuters, which includes meals.
