Knoxville Middle School has been designated as a “School in Need of Assistance” under No Child Left Behind. They received the designation because after not reaching the state’s objectives in proficiency improvement in reading for special education students. Knoxville Superintendent Dr. Randy Flack says that these students did show vast improvement, and that they were able to staff eight middle students out of special education last year, which affected those numbers. US Education Secretary Arne Duncan said earlier this month No Child Left Behind was “fundamentally flawed” in its current state.
