As school gets started, Diane Ellis, with Marion County Public Health, says that there are still many children who don’t have health insurance. She encourages anyone who knows of a child that isn’t insured to contact Marion County Public Health. Ellis says they will reach out to the family to find out if the child is eligible for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program. According to a 2009 Urban Institute study, 4.3 million children were eligible for either of these programs, but still went uninsured. Ellis says that schools are especially important to reaching out to these kids and their families.
