A train of successful outings for the Central College women’s soccer team came to a screeching halt on Saturday, as the Dutch were blanked 6-0 by 10th-ranked Wartburg College.

Central was outshot 34-4 in the match.  The loss leaves the Central women at 7-3 overall and 0-1 in the Iowa Conference, with their schedule resuming on Friday when they host Coe College for Senior Day.

A goal in the 70th minute allowed Wartburg College to sneak past the Central College men’s soccer team with a 1-0 victory on Saturday in the conference opener for both teams.  It’s the fourth time in the last five meetings that the Knights have evaded the Dutch by one score.

The Central men are now 5-4 overall and 0-1 in league play entering a non-conference match with Grinnell on Wednesday at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex Soccer Field in Pella.

The only member of the Central College men’s tennis team to reach the Iowa Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament finals rallied to claim a third place finish on Saturday.

Freshman Tim Kahl reached the semifinals Friday night with a dramatic comeback victory over Coe’s Michael Woolf, but was stopped on Saturday by eventual champion Dan Warden of Luther 6-2, 6-4.

Kahl stayed resilient in the third-place match, though, defeating Coe’s Alex Klaas 7-5, 6-3.  The Dutch wrap up their abbreviated fall schedule with a dual Wednesday at Indianola against Simpson College.

The Central College women’s tennis team finished strong to forge a 1-1 split in Saturday’s triangular in Pella.  The Dutch were ousted 7-2 by Ashford University to start the day, but rebounded with a 6-3 triumph over Morningside, including wins in two of the three doubles matches.

In singles play, Central got wins at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 5.  The only wins for the Dutch in the match with Ashford came at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.  The Central women are home again Tuesday, playing host to Simpson College.
