The Central College women’s and men’s soccer teams provided a strong start to the fall athletics season yesterday afternoon, notching a pair of wins in their season debuts.

Though they’ve won just three times in the past two years, the women’s squad notched a 2-1 come-from-behind upset of Grand View University, giving new head coach Mike Kobylinski his first win. Senior Kristi Klatt and freshman Gabbi Muse each scored in the second half, while goalkeeper Abby Norman made four saves to preserve the win.

The Central men also notched a 2-1 victory in the first game of the season, thanks to freshman Brandon Fritz’s game-winning goal in the 87th minute to give the Dutch a win over Elmhurst College. Senior co-captain Jonathan Schroeder scored the initial goal.

The Central College women’s soccer team will stay on their home field for the next two games, facing Minnesota-Morris today and then hosting Nebraska Wesleyan on Sunday. The Dutch men’s soccer team, meanwhile, hits the road to take on powerhouse Washington-St. Louis on Saturday.
