A number of local cross country squads, along with some of the top programs in the state, will all be in attendance at today’s Pella Invitational. Held at the Central College cross country course on the west side of Pella, the meet attracts teams across all class sizes and from all throughout the state.

Pella High head coach Doug Cutler is among those looking forward to the meet, and says it’s the quality of the teams that compete that make it so enjoyable.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch. It’s a great course. We’re hoping the weather is going to be nice enough that no one is going to have trouble with the heat,” said Cutler.

“[There will be] great schools. Cross-county rival Knoxville will be here, and they have a fantastic squad. Coach [Mike] Moats always does an excellent job. Waukee, Johnston, [and] Cedar Falls are all coming – Cedar Falls boys are the number two-ranked team in Class 4A. There’s a lot of ranked teams, a lot of ranked athletes…it’s a meet that we would really like to see become the premier early season meet.”

Along with the aforementioned teams from Pella and Knoxville, cross country squads from Pella Christian, PCM and Twin Cedars are also among the large field.

The Pella invitational will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
