The Central College volleyball team had its chances but the Dutch couldn’t close the deal and suffered a 3-1 non-conference defeat against William Penn Thursday night.  The Dutch fell by scores of 27-25, 22-25, 26-24, and 25-18.

Central rallied from deficits in both the first and third sets, but made errors at costly times to end its momentum. The Dutch missed a serve at game point in the opening set and had a rotation error at 24-24 in the third set.

They did have some bright spots on the evening, though, including the play of libero Chelsea Grieger – a senior from Pella – who tallied a match-best 32 digs.

Central is 16-5 overall and out of action until Tuesday, when the Dutch travel to Dubuque for an Iowa Conference matchup with Loras College at 7:30 p.m. Central defeated the Duhawks 31-33, 25-22, 25-23, 25-17 in its home tournament Oct. 1, but Loras swept the Dutch 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 in last season’s league meeting. Loras is 8-13 overall and 3-2 against conference opponents.
